six years poem

six years ago,

we nervously and absurdly dressed our 21 year old bodies in the most expensive things we’d ever owned, threw caution to the wind, and decided wherever life would take us, we’d go together.

six years later,

thank God our lives have taken parallel paths because neither of us emotionally resemble the kids in converse proclaiming their love for each other in front of a lot of their parents’ friends.

six years, six months, six weeks, six days, six hours from now-

we’ll plan all we want and watch our intentions blossom or crumble, challenge each other toward growth, lean on each other when one of us is empty, and continue to give ourselves permission to change into the people we still want to become.

and to that, i say, that’s a pretty good anniversary gift.
